2025 OCR AS Level Classical Civilisation Paper 22 and Mark Scheme Combined (H408/22 Imperial Image)

  • Imperial Image is one of the “Culture & the Arts” components for A‑Level Classical Civilisation (or AS Level under H008/22).

  • The focus is on the visual, material, and literary evidence surrounding the rise of the Roman Empire — especially how rulers (in particular Augustus and his successors) constructed, communicated, and used “imperial image” — through art, architecture, coinage, monuments, inscriptions, and literature — to project power, legitimacy, and ideology.

  • The course examines both material/visual sources (statues, reliefs, coins, monuments, public buildings, inscriptions) and literary sources (ancient texts).

  • The aim is to understand how Roman emperors, especially Augustus, shaped public perception — how they used imagery and propaganda to legitimise rule, link themselves with tradition and religion, and shape Roman identity and memory.
