2025 Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language 2.0 Paper 1 and Mark Scheme Combined (1EN2/01: Non-Fiction Texts)
Paper 1 is the Non-Fiction Reading and Transactional Writing component of the Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language 2.0 qualification (1EN2/01). This paper assesses students’ ability to read, understand, analyse, and evaluate non-fiction texts, as well as their skills in structured, purpose-driven writing.
Paper 1 contributes 50% of the total GCSE English Language 2.0 grade and combines reading comprehension with transactional writing tasks.
Paper 1 focuses on the following areas:
Understanding, interpreting, and analysing a variety of non-fiction texts (articles, reports, letters, speeches, leaflets, blogs)
Analysing language, structure, and presentation to understand meaning, viewpoint, and effect
Making inferences, identifying biases, and evaluating how writers engage readers
Producing clear, coherent, and structured writing for specific purposes and audiences
Using appropriate tone, style, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation
Planning and organising ideas effectively
Comparing ideas and perspectives across texts
Evaluating the effectiveness of rhetorical and structural techniques
Supporting interpretations with textual evidence
Section A – Reading:
Comprehension and analysis of one or more non-fiction texts
Questions assessing retrieval, inference, language analysis, and evaluation
Section B – Writing:
Transactional writing tasks requiring audience-focused, structured responses
The paper assesses the following skills:
AO1 – Identify and interpret explicit and implicit information
AO2 – Analyse how writers use language, structure, and presentation
AO3 – Compare texts, evaluate viewpoints, and analyse effectiveness
AO5 – Communicate clearly, effectively, and appropriately in writing
AO6 – Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures accurately
