Paper code: 1FR0/4H.
This is the Writing in French — Higher Tier exam.
Duration: 1 hour 20 minutes. Marks: 50 (or 60, depending on marking/scaling variant). According to one source the Higher‑tier writing paper is allocated 50 marks.
Weight: This paper counts for 25% of the total GCSE French qualification.
Purpose: It assesses a student’s ability to communicate effectively in written French for different purposes and audiences. Students must write responses of various lengths and types, including structured responses and translation tasks.
Instructions: The exam instructions are in English.
Under the specification for Higher Tier writing:
Question 1: One of two open‑response writing tasks set in an informal context — students write an answer in French (often a more personal or casual piece). (~ 18 marks)
Question 2: One of two open‑response writing tasks set in a formal context — students write a more formal piece in French. (~ 22 marks)
Question 3: Translation from English into French. (~ 10 marks)
For the open‑response questions, there is a recommended word count specified for each: this usually means about 80–90 words for shorter tasks, or around 130–150 words for longer pieces (depending on the variant).
Students are not allowed to use dictionaries.
You need to be confident writing in French for different purposes: informal (e.g. postcard, message, email to friend) and formal (e.g. letter, article, formal email).
You must be able to translate from English into French accurately — showing good command of vocabulary and grammar.
You should practice varying lengths: short structured writing (≈ 80–90 words) and longer open responses (≈ 130–150 words), ensuring you cover required bullet‑points (content, opinions, justifications, etc.).
Pay attention to formal vs informal register depending on the task.
Work on accuracy: grammar, spelling, appropriate vocabulary, and clarity.
